We’re just gonna say it: there’s no place like Montana.
From our homebase along the Rocky Mountain Front in Augusta, we operate an outfitting business in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, where we take guests on six-day pack trips during the summer. And while we know we’re partial to Big Sky Country and our state’s wide-open places, there’s nothing like a pack trip in The Bob.
For many, these types of trips are bucket list adventures that come along once in a lifetime. And for others, this is a trip that calls to them more than once, with some guests returning to explore Montana’s wilderness as return visitors. No matter if this is your first time into one of America’s most epic places or if you’re returning for a repeat trip with us, we’d love to take you into the heart of Montana.
Here are a few things we love about summer pack trips:
1. You’re completely unplugged. While life gets hectic and the world spins madly on around us, our pack trips require you to slow down, unplug and get acquainted with the earth. Once we travel a few miles up the road from our homebase in Augusta, we lose cell service and we won’t have it again until we return to town after our trip. This type of trip is practically designed to give you time to simply slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with the heart of what matters. (Sidenote: we do have a phone we can use in case of emergencies.)
2. Travel on horseback. There aren’t many destinations that remain that you access on horseback. Our summer camp – which is based at White River – is in the third-largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. To access it, we depart from Benchmark Trailhead and ride in 24 miles, crossing the Continental Divide on our way. Most of this journey is done on horseback (we do stop and walk our horses throughout the ride, giving them a break and us a break). Our herd of horses, along with our pack mules, are the best in the business.
3. Dark sky. Seeing the Milky Way from the wilds of Montana is a view you won’t soon forget. There is essentially zero light pollution, which means when you look up at the night sky you have as clear of a view as you’ll likely ever have. Our advice: be sure to stay up late to see the night stars.
If you’re ready to book a summer vacation to Montana, we’d love to visit with you. You can see 2026 dates and rates here or call us at 406-562-3576.
We can’t wait to adventure with you in Big Sky Country,
-The Mills Family
